“A High Quality, Relevant Public Education is the Great Equalizer”

“A high, quality, relevant public education is the Great Equalizer”. This may not be the first time this statement (or some variation of it) has been made. Certainly not an original one from me, but I have coined it in my campaign speech because I believe it to be true.

For me, this “Great Equalizer” statement is not some “catchy phrase” but the reality of my legacy. I often share the story of my mother, who was orphaned at age 13, sent from rural Alabama to Lexington, KY to finish high school, and worked as a domestic to put herself through college. Both my mother and father earned their college degrees in the 1950s, eventually married and settled down on the west side of Chicago. It was different for them than it was for their white counterparts with similar backgrounds who were settling in nicer neighborhoods in the city. It took my college educated parents 14 years to break out of the “hood” and experience home ownership. However, in that journey my sister and I learned the importance of education and hard work. Our parents worked with our school teachers and administrators to insure our success. Despite any odds, they wanted their girls to be successful in our chosen careers and make a difference in our communities.

A high, quality, relevant public education gives our young people options in life, no matter where they start. It equips them to break out of challenging environments, be positive change agents in their communities, raise good families, and leave great legacies.

A high quality, relevant public education includes ALL students!! This system breaks down barriers to access and prevents barriers from being erected. It allows the flavor and culture of communities to enhance the educational experiences of its children, making learning exciting, enjoyable, and applicable to where they live.

A high quality, relevant public education provides foundational skills such as reading with solid comprehension, competence in math, and expression through writing. Our students will understand the world around them through science and the governmental and societal structures in which we live so they can positively impact their communities. It would teach critical thinking skills, provide tools for problem solving, foster creativity, and provide leadership opportunities for personal growth. Regardless of the path they choose right out of high school or later in life (immediate job, military, college), our students would be ready for success. A high quality, relevant public education is the Great Equalizer!

My parents wanted me to have options in life. I want the students in the Cincinnati Public Schools district to have options in life, too. A high quality, relevant, public education levels the playing field for them just like it did for my mother, who became a high school Math teacher, and later a caseworker in the juvenile court system. It will inspire young people to branch out into different fields of study, like my father, who was a career lab chemist for a major manufacturing company. It will raise up our next generation of public servants, city architects, teachers and professors, and business owners. This is what I will fight for as your Cincinnati Public Schools Board member - a high quality, relevant public education for ALL students - the Great Equalizer!
